Seven Sisters Inn
T.A.P.S Investigated the Seven Sisters Inn, in Ocala FL.
See the investigation here.
part1 - part2 - part3 - part4
At one point Jason's Flip Flop goes missing only to turn up in a different room that they had not entered, they assume it's the little boy that has been mentioned to haunt this Inn ... This intrigued me so I decided to take on the task of finding this little boy. Which has proven to be very difficult. Along my travels I have discovered many names of folks who died at this location and a few mentions of a small boy.
Here are my finding:
Battle of Fort King - Second Seminole War
Fort King was referred to as Camp king in old archive.. or Cantonment King
As I understand it one of the houses stands on part of the grounds for the battle of Fort King.. this battle was dubbed the "Indian war" between the Seminoles and the early settlers. It began in the 1830's as the second seminal war. Click here for brief History on the war.
According to this site there is a very low number of incidents and deaths that actually happened on the grounds of Fort King: Fort King, with six incidents and nine officers and soldiers killed in battle, a very large number of deaths were do to disease: out of some 1,466, 328 died in battle.
List of names and reasons for deaths:
An Indian man (June 19th - 1835) - killed at the skirmish at Hickory Sink - over stolen and eaten cattle.
Pvt. Kinsley Dalton (august 1835) - mail express, before the 2nd war started. believed to be in response for a Indian death at the skirmish at Hickory Sink. He was on route to Fort King from Fort Brook. (Dalton, Georgia, named for him)
Chief Charley Emathla (November - 1835) - Sold his cattle at Fort King and agreed to removal of his tribe and family- Read more about removal here "Treaty of Payne's Landing". Chief Osceola killed him as was part of his rule made months earlier - any Seminole chief who sold his cattle would be sentenced to death - he was on the Indian trail from Fort King. - This marked the last death before the war began.
Second Seminal war begins.
General Wiley Thompson - Indian agent- died of gunshot wounds by chief Osceola - most accounts say he was strolling after or before dinner around the sutlers store (which is said to have been with in a hundred yards of the Fort).
Lieutenant Constantine Smith - walking with the general - killed same way.
Erastus Rogers Was the sutler - He was killed at his store with 2 other clerks and a 12 year old boy all scalped - some accounts say the boy was not scalped. (the number of deaths at the sutlers store changes in every article - two seems to be the most common said) It is said chief Osceola was robbing the store of guns and ammo to go meet his tribe at the Dade Massacre
The other two known deaths at the store were:
Mr Suggs - (damaged old archive - looks like Holtzler... look for date - 22 Jan. 1836) - Store Clerk or helper?
Hitzler - (damaged old archive - looks like Holtzler... look for date - 22 Jan. 1836) - another store clerk or helper.
12 year old boy said to have been a store helper.
Unfortunately I was not able to find the name of the boy that died - my other alternative is to compare a map of Fort King and present day Ocala and see if the Sutlers store matches the location of the Seven Sisters Inn... that would at least put this boy at the right location. I have found one old map of the Fort courtesy of Exploring Florida As you can see we're not working on much detail on this map... I'll have to come back to this when I find out more info. I'd like to one day look up letters written at the time of this battle and find mention of the deaths and names at the Sutlers store. But for now we at least have a mention of the twelve year old boy. Who knows maybe one day he'll tell us his name. If you have any info on this please write me at sassafrascal@gmail.com
